C A L L – F O R – E N T R I E S
designboom international graphic design competition.
participation is open to to applicants from every country in the world,
to professionals, students, and design-enthusiasts.
free registration required.

the french luxury brand, Hermès, in collaboration with designboom organize
a graphic international design competition:

01 – the subject of the international competition is
‘les cravates par Hermès’

Hermès, house of quality, is world renowned for its fine silk, and particularly for ties.
they embody fine craftsmanship, masterful design and timeless style.
we expect to receive innovative and original pattern designs for ties that brighten up
men’s wardrobe. we want to be surprised by refined ‘all-over’ designs -
repeating or non repeating patterns in which the motifs recur in a design covering the entire cloth.

you are asked to develop a new pattern that could be either a re-interpretation of the
Hermes classic patterns (equestrian -, sport -, marine theme, whimsical animal motifs,
geometric variations including stripes, plant and flower designs and the H delicately
imprinted across the surface of the tie) or something completely different,
that could be used for the silk-screen printing – or weaving technique.

please download THIS pdf file and use it as the canvas for your pattern design.
you are asked to work on the full length of the tie to illustrate the pattern development.

02 – awards
more than a conceptual design competition, this is a call for production.
it is the ambition of Hermès to produce the best entries and this is the REAL benefit of
this contest. the creators of selected pattern designs will receive a royalty-based
license contract. there are also three cash prizes:
-first prize € 3000 euro
-second prize € 2000 euro
-third prize € 1000 euro

and as always designboom will publish an exhaustive results report.

previously published or exhibited projects are not accepted!
designers assume to be the authors of the designs, which must be original works,
and that they did not collaborate with (or benefit from the contribution of) any person
apt to avail himself, in particular, of the capacity as author, or whose personality
rights might be concerned.
designs must stay confidential until the option period termination as
agreed by the parties (
6 months after the competition ends ). in case of an agreement
between Hermès and the designer the designs shall stay confidential until the first
commercialisation made by Hermès.

please don’t send in vague concepts, but go a step further.
it’s not the idea which is the art,
